Presidential debate blogging

September 30th, 2004 · 1 Comment

Ok, so I’m getting started a little late, and thus, I’m not going to discuss the first 2 questions that were asked. Though I do believe Kerry is off to a good start in the debate and is focusing on Osama Bin Laden.
Read on for the rest
8:09 Bush is bringing up Kerry’s votes on Iraq. This could backfire for Bush, because Kerry just smiled and nodded, “Yes I did”

8:10 Bush is now discussing failed inspections, and Kerry’s views regarding Huessien being of a “pre-9-11 mentality.” Now Bush is responding to Kerry’s assertation about having more troups in Iraq than Afgahnistan and not having caught Bin Laden. But Bush is really sidestepping the question. He just had a slip of the tongue, confusing Bin Laden and Huessein.

8:12 “The biggest mistake we could make is not staying in Iraq”–Bush

8:13 Kerry’s Response. Kerry is slamming Bush on invading Iraq as a center of terrorism. That terrorism wasn’t an issue in Iraq at first. Slamming not having a vision to be able to achieve a victory in Iraq

8:14 Bush is talking about Kerry talking about us fighting the wrong war in the wrong place. Keeping to his party line of being steadfast.

8:15 Kerry wants to show resolve in Iraq, but that we made a mistake to begin with, that we now need to fix it.

8:16 Moderator: Kerry, what would you do differently to improve homeland security

Kerry–We are sending police to Iraq, cutting forces here. Bush hasn’t spent a nickel on improving the US infrastructure. Hit on the tax cut for the wealthy instead of spending that money on the war on terror. Just hit Bush bowing to Chemical Industry lobbyist to make it more money instead of securing the factories

Bush response– Attacking the tax cap and the money Kerry would spend. But then talks about how he’s tripling security. Touted spending 3.1 billion dollars on police. Saying best way to stay safe here is to be on the offensive. Now touting the Patriot Act

Kerry Response– Attacking FBI and unlistened to evidence.

Bush—we do everthing we can to protect America. Saying, its hard word and there are good people doing it. Bush is getting flustered it seems.

New question. For Bush, on best way for Iraq to be safe and secure. Touting training of law officials in Iraq. Says he wants to bring troups home, but not until Iraq is ready to defend itself from Iraq. Talking about how we can’t put a schedule on it. Sounds like some people I know, claiming its impossible to put deadlines on midly intangible things. “A free Iraq is essential for the freedom of this country.”

Kerry thanks troups, says help is on the way. Talking about meeting 2 troups in a rope line yesterday, them saying “we need your help.” Talking about Bush Sr. and the reason he didn’t go into Iraq was because there was no viable exit strategy. Every step of the way, according to Kerry, we thought about Oil, and nothing else, protecting oil, not anything else.

Bush response….”Help is on the way? what is he trying to tell the troups?” Also attacking Kerry’s no vote on a 87 billion dollar spending bill.

Kerry says he believes that when something is going wrong you have to have the ability to realize this.

Question about being the last man to die for a mistake. Kerry is talking about this war not being a mistake. Could be a ball buster, as it is the opposite of what he has been saying. Talking about Bush not following through on speach promises about being careful with Iraq. Discussing our need to bring other countries into the solution on Iraq. Talking about Bush pushing our allies away.

Bush says, “That was totally absurb and was invited in.” About the Allies, what is Kerry saying to Blair and Poland by saying we didn’t have allie support. Bush just said something about, a grand diversion, and made no sense in the context. Saying that other countries are not going to follow someone who thinks its the wrong war at the wrong time.

Kerry response: “Annan offered help” but we didn’t take it. England, Australia, and us does not make a grand coalition.

Bush is really hitting on a, what I think is a non-issue, that Kerry is slamming our allies.

New question, “There was a miscalulation in the war on iraq, what was it?”

Bush– Because we achieved such a rapid victory, we surprised ourselves, essentially. We are now fighting those we expected to be fighting us to begin with. “I’m optimistic we are going to achieve our adjective.” Says we have a plan, and that they will have an election and troups, and that they will. Hard work to go from Tyrany to democracy.

Kerry– Hitting on the knowing of no WMD, no immenent threat and no connection with Bin Laden. Good policy is based on good leadership. Kerry mending allied fences. That the size of forces from other countries does not add up to hardly anything. Hit on North Korea having nuclear weapons.

Question about Kerry claiming Bush lying about WMD. Hitting on the State of the Union. About Bush not doing what he said about diplomatic solutions to things. Talking about Bush not understanding what he is really doing. We need to be started about how we wage our war on terror.

Bush– This is kinda gibberish. Talking about all the qoutes from Kerry in support on Iraq not being misleading. Really saved this particular answer.

Kerry’s response, agreeing with what Bush just said about his support on Iraq. Say’s there was a right way and wrong way to disarm Iraq and that Bush chose the wrong way.

Bush saying the only position Kerry didn’t change was that he didn’t keep a position.

New Question– Has the war in Iraw been worth the US human life cost.

Bush– Every life is present and every life matters. Talking about the weight of the decision to send people into harms way. Thinks the human sacrifice is noble and worthy. Sounds a little like the same kind of way terrorists talk…and I would say the same thing probably. Not faulting that line…just a thought I had.

Kerry response: Kerry talking about knowing what its like to loose life in a war. Just made a mistake and went down the Vietnam path. He really leans on it far far far too much. Says he wants to make sure the outcome of Iraq is as noble and worthwhile of the sacrifices. President is not getting the job done. Really needs to get off the “hunt and kill terrorists” (emphasis mine).

New question: Kerry, give us specifics for ending major US military involvement in Iraq.

Kerry: Bush misled on my statements. Need to convince the middle east that we are not there for more than doing our job. Kerry is writing a lot as he speaks and listens. I wonder if he’s actually writing notes, or if he’s trying to look busy and contemplative.

Anyone else notice that Bush has a blue tie and Kerry has a red tie? Kinda funny to me, and their political colors.

Bush’s response: Keeps talking about the trained forces in Iraq. Slamming the Kerry criticism on the Prime Minister of Iraq. Saying its impossible to change the dynamic taking that position. Where did that come from, something about not believing the Iraqi’s don’t want to be free.

Eh….missed that question.

I jus can’t keep up with this. So I’m going to quit blogging and try to pay more complete attention. I might post a follow up.
