Beer blogging

Two weeks ago this Saturday, October 1th, I embarked on what is sure to be a long and exciting journey. Well, I should rephrase that, Chris and I embarked on what is sure to be a long and exciting journey. Oh yes, it is true, the rumors you’ve been hearing. It is true, we aren’t sure where it is going to take us. But one thing is sure, it will get us drunk along the way (we hope).

Yes folks, we have entered the world of brewing beer. Chris found a little home-brew kit from Mr. Beer.

We decided to go with Ginger’s Castaway Ale, which made use of both brown sugar and freshly grated ginger for brewing. On the 10th we bottled it, or should I say Clint, our neighbor Claudia, and I bottled it before Chris got home from some class. The beer needed about a week of storage time in the bottles to let the yeast eat the table sugar (put in the bottles before the before) and release carbonation.

When I got home from DC on Sunday I put the beer in the fridge to Lager, a process that is supposed to help the taste of the beer. We are supposed to let it Lager for at least a week, and it is difficult, but we are doing it. I plan on trying it on Sunday, but in all honesty…I have a feeling its going to suck because of our water. When we sampled the flat beer before bottling it had a medicinal taste, which is generally associated with chlorine in the water. Of course we did use a brita filter, but I don’t know that it worked all the way. But we’ll find out now, won’t we!

[…] Well, we tried the beer, and we are disappointed. Ok, so disappointed isn’t the right word, as we didn’t expect it to be great. It definately had the mediciny taste that I talked about before (0 hits). But, it is beer, and you can tell that it is beer. So we’ll just have to get wasted and run out of beer and drink it while drunk to choke it down. […]
