Genetic Manipulation meets Intelligent Design

November 29th, 2005 · 1 Comment

The Geopolitical Review is trying to make an argument that the Swiss opposition to genetically modified crops to some in the US fighting the teaching of evolution. I think their argument is bullshit. The author, Jeff, is trying to compare too unlike things. On the one hand are the Swiss, who are resisting using GM agricultural techniques. On the other, some in the US are trying to move away from teaching evolution and instead bringing theocracy into the classroom through the guise of Intelligent design.

There are stark differences though between these two conflicts. Mainly being that the Swiss aren’t denying there is science behind the GM. They simply are stating that they don’t want to use the genetically modified goods. Thats not anti-science, its skepticism that the advances that have been made are really for the good of humanity. It would be easier to draw a parallel between this and the atomic bomb, in my opinion, than the ID debate that is raging in America. The A-Bomb is certainly an incredible scientific advance, but in hindsight was one of the worst things to ever happen to our planet. Anyone disagree?

Certain constituents in the US on the other hand, are denying that there is science behind evolution. They are claiming that the only way to explain our existence is through ID. Forget that ID, as it historically works, is in totally harmony with evolution. Instead there is a movement here that ID is science and it is in direct conflict with evolution.

Now I don’t know if I would then consider the situation in the US to be akin to be hostile to science, though I can understand and sympathize with that position. But I certainly don’t think the Swiss point of view is really anti-science, it seems to be much more a situation of resisting the application of the science.
