In the last 3 days I’ve finished books 13, 14, and 15 for the year. The first to finish up was The Omnivore’s Dilemma. That book makes you really think about what you are eating and putting into your body. Over the course of some 400+ pages the author takes you through the natural history of several meals.
Did you know, we are made up primarily of corn? Mexicans used to be called the corn people, but we ultimately eat more of it than any other culture of the world, per capita, because of how we consume it through our meat. It was a really fascinating read, and inspiring as well…I think we won’t be buying much meat from Jewel if we can help it.
The 2nd book I finished was yesterday and was Stephen King’s The Gunslinger, the first book in the Dark Tower series. I’ve never read this series before…but I get the general idea and am interested to see where it goes over the next 6 books and 4500 some odd pages. Hopefully a co-worker will be bringing me a few more books in the series on Monday.
The 3rd book I just finished was John Scalzi’s Old Man’s War. Its the first in a sci-fi trilogy and the first 100 pages sets up the basis of the universe we live in and how the interstellar military is made up of people that are 75 years old when they enter as fresh recruits. Really neat stuff, this was the 2nd Scalzi book I read, the first was also free online, and was Agent To The Stars, and his writing style is right up my alley of ideal. I look forward to picking up hard copies of The Ghost Brigades, the 2nd book in the series, soon as well.
That brings me to what I’m reading now…a co-worker lent me Robert Stone’s Dog Soldiers earlier this week and I started it this morning…hopefully I’ll finish it up over the weekend. It is starting off interesting and I’m curious where it will go.
That makes for 15 down, 35 to go.
